Witchety Grubs

Back to recipe list

Source & History

Another recipe from the Every Aussie Kid's Cook Book. I have a feeling we made these ones, too. If we didn't, we should have. The others from the book that were favourites were Kookie-burras and Wombat's Paws.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cheddar cheese grated
  • 1 150g tin creamed corn
  • 2 tsp cooking oil
  • 1 cup flour self-raising
  • extra flour
  • 2 cherrios or a kabana
  • 4 pecans halved legthways

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. Grease a baking tray or put a piece of baking paper on the tray.
  2. Put cheese, creamed corn and oil in a bowl and mix well.
  3. Add the flour to the mixture and stir until it forms one big lump.
  4. Flour your hands then divide the mixture into 16 small pieces all the same size and roll into a ball.
  5. Form witchety grubs by taking 4 balls at a time and placing them in a slightly curved row on the baking tray. Leave plenty of room between the grubs because they will spread. Instruction Image
  6. Cut each cherrio or the kabana into round slices. Press a piece of sausage into the centre of the 3 back balls until it squahes right into the mixture. Leave the head without a piece. Instruction Image
  7. Stick 2 pecan pieces into the head of each grub for feelers.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes. Allow to cool on the tray for a couple of minutes before removing and serving. Eat hot or cold. Instruction Image
